As the manager of an antique mall, I am constantly surprised at some of the merchandise for sale here and amazed that these extraordinary items sell.
One of the most unique and discussed item in our store was the hog oiler. A hog oiler is a mechanical device used on farms to provide relief from insects and offer an animal skin protection. It’s a tank that holds and distributes oil onto the hog. Animals seeking relief would rub up against a wheel causing it to rotate and dispense oil on them.
Hog oilers were produced in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs; however most were made of cast iron. Most were produced from 1913 to 1923. During this time some 20 patents were issued by the U.S. Patent Office.
Hog oilers today can be used for garden designs and are great conversation pieces. Many hog oilers are painted with unique designs, such as watermelons, billiard balls and everything in between.
Hog oilers range in price from $30.00 to $2,000.00 based on the rarity and condition of the oiler and the demand for the item. If you are looking for a unique item to collect you might consider the hog oiler.
